Chest infections are common and normally associated with a cough which is worse at night and can often be induced by exercise. The cough can typically last around 2-3 weeks with symptoms of chest tightness and/or excessive mucus production. Chest infections are normally a result of bacteria or viruses which attack the airways or lungs, hence pneumonia and bronchitis are two of the most prevalent forms of respiratory infections. If the chest infection is caused by bacteria (like pneumonia) symptoms are generally managed with antibiotics, if the causative agent is a virus antibiotics are not normally required.
Symptoms of chest infection
✅Feeling generally unwell and tired
✅Fever
✅Aching muscles
✅Wheeze (make a whistling sound when you breathe) and feel short of breath
✅Cough up mucus
You should visit the doctor if you’re worried about your symptoms or if you have other health problems. Some symptoms might mean you have a more serious condition and therefore you should see your doctor if you
🚩Have a high temperature (more than 38OC)
🚩Feel very breathless
🚩Chest pains
🚩Cough up blood
Your doctor might send you for a chest x-ray to check if you have pneumonia. Pneumonia occurs when bacteria infect the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. If this happens additional treatment including antibiotics maybe required
What treatments work
Bronchitis usually clears up on its own, painkillers such as paracetamol can help ease symptoms. It’s advisable to drink plenty of fluids and medicines such as cough suppressants can be useful to get a good nights sleep. Cough medicines which contain expectorants help to liquify and clear mucus, different branded products are available from the pharmacy.
