Ear pain can be a consequence of many reasons, the main being an infection. This can result in inflammation which can be caused by bacteria, virus or fungus and affect different parts of the ear.
Symptoms
There are 3 main types of ear infection which can affect 3 parts of the ear
Inner ear infection
This condition involves inflammation as opposed to an actual infection, symptoms may include
❌Dizziness
❌Vomiting
❌Sudden hearing loss
These symptoms would require immediate referral to the G.P as they could be signs of a serious underlying condition.
Middle ear infection
This is the area behind the ear drum and a middle ear infection is normally referred to as otitis media. It’s normally caused by fluid trapped behind the ear drum which causes the ear drum to bulge. Otitis media is more common in children, though it may occur in adults and can cause
✅Pain
✅Deafness
✅Fever
✅Vomiting
The ear drum can appear red, bulging or discharge maybe present. If you experience fluid draining from the ear, it could be a sign the middle ear infection has progressed to tympanic membrane rupture. This can cause a sudden loss in hearing but tends to heal on its own.
Outer Ear Infection
Outer ear is the part of the ear that extends out from the eardrum to the ear opening. An outer ear infection is known as otitis externa and it can often cause an itchy discomfort rather than pain. An outer ear infection is sometimes called ‘Swimmer’s ear’. This is because it often starts as a result of water remaining in the ear after swimming or bathing. The moisture becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. If your outer ear is scratched or irritated by putting fingers or other objects in the ear, a bacterial infection can occur.
