Emergency Salbutamol Inhaler

If you urgently need a blue reliever inhaler and are unable to see your GP, we may be able to prescribe one as an emergency request.

About Your Reliever Inhaler

Your inhaler contains salbutamol, a fast-acting medication that relaxes the muscles in the airways, making it easier to breathe. It provides immediate relief from symptoms such as wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. However, it does not prevent breathlessness or long-term asthma symptoms.

What is Asthma and How Does It Affect You?

Asthma is a condition that makes breathing difficult by causing inflammation and swelling in the small airways of the lungs. This narrowing restricts airflow, making it harder to breathe.

Similar to allergies, asthma can be triggered by airborne substances such as dust mites, pollen, and pet fur. Other common triggers include tobacco smoke, air pollution, strong chemical fumes (e.g., bleach), exercise, and respiratory infections like colds or chest infections.

What are the symptoms?

✅Breathing problems

✅Coughing

✅Tightness in the chest

✅Wheeze (rattle-like sound with each breath)

⚠️ Everyday 3 people die from asthma in the UK because they didn’t recognise their asthma was getting worse and/or didn’t get medical help.

Therefore:

!Use your preventer inhaler regularly as prescribed

!Have an upto date asthma action plan

!Ensure that you’re using your inhaler correctly

!Awareness of asthma triggers

!Ensure you have access to your blue inhaler at all times.

⚠️ An Asthma action plan details what medicine the person takes every day, what they should do if their symptoms get worse and what to do in an emergency.

It’s important to have your blue inhaler in easy access just in case your symptoms exacerbate. If you lose or run out of your inhaler and are unable to get a prescription through your G.P, we maybe able to prescribe an emergency inhaler.
