Impetigo is a contagious bacterial skin infection. It can affect people of any age, however it is most common in children

What causes impetigo?

Impetigo is caused by bacteria, primarily Staphylococcus aureus. Bacteria thrive in hot, moist environments and so impetigo tends to be seasonal, peaking in the summer months.

How does impetigo spread?

Impetigo is highly contagious and is spread by skin to skin contact or through transmission via bedding, clothes, toys or towels. For this reason, it easily spreads in environments such as schools and around households between family members. Additionally, scratching the sores can promote the spread of the infection to another part of the body

Symptoms

Impetigo can appear anywhere, but is most common on exposed skin such as the face (around the nose and mouth) and limbs. It is rare to get systemic symptoms such as fever or swollen glands, however these can be present in severe cases or if large areas of skin are affected
